New I-A-B, New You: If You Haven't Noticed Yet, I-A-B Made A Few Changes Over Night

Submitted by: fancylad 2 months ago Lifestyle

Hey I-A-B,

Like I've been promising ever since we (Sunny, J-Dog, and I) bought I-A-B from Demand Media now Leaf, a redesign was in the works, and what you're seeing right now is stage one of several stages of improvement.

Things are a little easier on the eyes, and everything is built on custom architecture created by Sunny, from scratch. (Major props to Sunny for this entire rebuild, from top to bottom.) The other new thing is how articles will be ranked. All articles (staff and submitted) will be given a combination of points based off the submission, user likes, and user comments. It's not a complicated algorithm, but there'll be a notated page that explains how you accumulate points.

Next thing on the docket is to flesh out the aforementioned points registered users will acquire as they read, submitted, comment, or a combination of any of those -- this number absorbs and replaces the old number which only recorded accepted submissions and comments. I also want to flesh out user profiles -- there are some of you who have lifetime charter status coming and I haven't forgotten about that.

That's it. Short and sweet. Leave your feedback, good and bad, in the thread.

xoxo, Fancylad

I agree. This website is much more enjoyable. And I think it's only going to get better. Since Sunny built it from scratch, he's able to continually improve it. This has been a huge step forward for I-A-B. Thank you, Sunny! (And Fancy and J-Dog and LaLa, too, of course.)

Hey, Sunny, is there still a 4 character minimum on usernames?  I'd love to get rid of the hyphen in mine.  I know this is trivial but thought I'd ask while you're easily accessible here :)

However? I still cannot Submit Content because it refuses to let me place a picture there.
- I cannot drag & drop from my PC
- I cannot move a picture from another site (it just opens the picture in this tab, obliterating IAB)
- I cannot paste anything at all in that box, ever
- I cannot submit without a picture, it says Whoops... and fails.

Oh hey, I turned my AdBlocker off... and it might have sent one through. Without the picture still, lolz!
I had to have AdBlock on before, the video ads literally destroyed my internet connection, as well as being really annoying...

Oh no, same old browser (IE) same old PC (really, it's pretty old!) with stupid Windows.
The only other thing I could use is Chrome... which often fails me so I only use it when IE is completely blocked from something.
I had just tried to Submit with AdBlock on, and got the Whoops. So I thought maybe if I turned it off the pictures could drop? They didn't but at least it didn't say Whoops after I clicked Submit eh? It went through?

Have not tried it with IE yet but in fire fox copy and paste works with internet pics but I still can not post pics from my hard drive I have not submitted anything with a pic but I am going to try. One thing That is strange on FireFox my text I type doesn't show in the bubble for a few seconds after I type it.

To post an Image (the easy way)
  1. Find it on the internet
  2. put it in it's own tab
  3. Right-click and copy
  4. Paste here!

If you can see it before you post? It ought to work!

Insane_ai, put your unsolicited dik-dik back in your pants. Hmph. Although... if they made dik-diks small enough, I would consider having one for a pet. But your dik-dik looks entirely too big. Sorry. Well, wait: I may be jumping to conclusions here. How big is your dik-dik? ... Perhaps it's just the size of the image that's the problem. Have you tried resizing your dik-dik?
0
Reply
Male 1,616
So it turns out your dik-dik is just the right size! According to Wikipedia, dik-diks, which are small antelope that live in the bushlands of Africa, stand about 12 inches tall at the shoulder. This means they would be about the same proportion to me as a horse would be to a human. So now I'm thinking of creating a little dik-dik stable at the base of my oak tree. I can just imagine the looks of jealousy from the other squirrels the first morning they see me riding my dik-dik at full gallop, the morning dew spraying off my steed's hooves. Brrrump-brrrump-brrrump-brrrump! It will be majestic, I tell you.

Title, description, text (and link)  and a drag & drop picture box.

Is there no way to view 'newest comments first' or something?

Can I just drop some suggestions here? That would be cool...

Several times, it always says 'Whoops something is wrong". when I hit submit

I feel like my heart has been broken, stevie nicks "landslide" playing softly, i have been coming to this site for the last almost decade. 9 years, quietly in the background, just an evil dictator. Some hardcore oldies may remember me, I used to haunt the chatroom when I was in middle school. The new site is just another reminder that the world moves on. Love to all the IAB'ers . -- ED

Yeah, save for the odd hiccup, IAB has had a black background since the beginning, when it existed as one page with a dozen or so links to cool sites. Eventually, a forum was added, and existed as one long thread where we suggested other cool links...submissions were born. The site was redesigned, and tweaked over the years, but still retained the black background.

Love that we'll have an option to go back, should keep everyone happy. :)

I don't think that functionality is in place yet. Sunny has scratch-built everything to get us onto a faster, less buggy, more customizable platform. Consequently, some of the bells and whistles that came with the WordPress code will need to be added once this initial rollout is complete. From comments made by Fancy and Sunny, I gather Sunny's got a todo list as long as your arm. (Hang in there, Sunny! Just think of it as great job security.)

@5Cats (and anyone else interested): An easy way to resize images is to head over to Postimage.org. Select the "Upload by URL" tab at the top left of the page, enter your image's URL and select the size you want. For most images, you'll want the "message boards" option (640x480); for smaller things, go at least one size smaller and select (for example) the "websites and email" option (320x240).

It's fast and free. Here's the link: https://postimage.org/web.php

Hope this helps.

Hey also when a post gets approved and ends up on the front board the edit and delete buttons are still available. It's a small issue but if someone accidentally presses the delete button while scrolling, it could delete the whole post for everybody. Yet I just tested trying to delete an old draft post and it wouldn't delete so maybe the button doesn't work. Yet the draft was submitted was before the remake so I don't know, I'm not going to pull the trigger on any of my newer submissions just yet.

Featured images is fixed.  Now when you update, you should see the update happen.

Delete button works.. it marks the post as deleted but doesn't remove it.  However, admin's can remove it from the system.  This was done to prevent misuse of the delete button :)

When you hit delete, it removes it from the front page.  It still shows up in your posts but delete button changes color and its marked as deleted.  Like so:

@fancyclad ...I can't see how to access PM's (view, or send) or how to actually change anything in my profile at all...Normally I use FF, which I understand is buggy atm, and can be patient with that fix, but have tried on chrome as well...mebbe it's id10t or pebkac, on my part, but I'm not sure...I was sober when I tried to find it. I swear!

Yay! Bold, italics, para breaks. Code insert...and most importantly, bullet points and numbered lists! (edit, most importantly is the edit button, as just demonstrated to fix a typo!) You know what this means?

  1. no more >>>> from a certain someone, and, secondly;

  • No more >>>> from a certain someone.

Now, I know that's (edit: technically) the same thing, repeated, but I thought it was worth mentioning twice. ;)

(edit: I'm losing track of how many times I've edited this post, just because I can! You can't imagine how hard it is for an OCD pedantic bastard (like me) to submit a comment with a finger-fumble typo, without being able to correct it....finally, Everything's coming up Butters! Welcome, Dinodino. Good job on selecting an avatar right off the bat. There are some folks on here who still haven't uploaded an avatar 1,000 posts in. (Yes, Bliznik and Robthelurker, I'm lookin' at you.)

It would be nice if we could select our sort order.  I personally prefer oldest > newest.

Ditto. I'm lobbying for an older-to-newer sort (AKA, an ascending sort) on the comments also, as well as putting the comment entry box at the bottom of the comments instead of atop them.

Yup, I'm with you for all the reasons you stated in an earlier post and I'm with you on the dark theme as well.  I find it's easier on the eyes and I think it has a distinctive look, too.  It's not exactly common on other sites.

P.S. Yay, paragraphs!

This is actually how it used to be in 2008ish, I think. It was combat all the "firsts." but yeah, it's a little weird now. That's a Sunny thing -- I'm going to talk with him soon and mention it. I like the option idea where one can choose: first to last, last to first, and best/most liked.

Fancy, here's a quick-and-dirty mockup of the new design with the dark theme. Don't hate me: But having flipped back and forth between this version and the light one, I'm finding I prefer the dark one. It seems more cohesive.

I hate chrome...but tried this. Got the sidebar up after F12, but couldn't find 'styles'...

Male 1,687
yeah i hate chrome too.. but hmm about the styles what you're looking for is the code block that looks like this:
body{
     color: white;
     background-color: black;
     ...
}
specifically the body{} code block.  you won't see color:  but background-color should be already set to like #fffff, so just change that to "black" and in the code block (within the {}'s fill in color: white;, like shown above.  It's just modifying the CSS styles and isn't resident (disappears on page refresh)

btw the site is cool now.

and look, real line breaks

what does this do
oh that's kinda cool

	do {
		int ranX = rand() % WIDTH;
		int ranY = rand() % HEIGHT;
		int randNum= rand() % 4;

		if (class->getStuff(ranX, ranY) == NULL) {
			SubClass *subclass = new SubClass (class, WIDTH, HEIGHT);
			subclass->setSomeStuff(ranX, ranY);
			subclass->setSomeStuff(randNum);
			randNum++;
		}
Nice.. a code block

  1. This is the list thing
  2. i like it
  3. this is the list thing continuing
  4. and on
  5. how do i stop this

you press the button again!

Are you talking about the home page? There's around 20 per page, but since they're a little more fleshed out, you only get about 5  articles at a time above the fold.

Pretty snazzy..but I got to side with the white on Black folks..  I like the IAB that blended with the dark room when im kicking back and enjoying some late night downtime...this just feels a little loud and obnoxious for my personal tastes.  Outside that good coding, nice layout...I might suggest compacting it up a bit, smaller fonts, less scrolling..outside that gratz and good job.

No difference to me! There already were several IAB Liberals who simply voted "1" on EVERYTHING I had posted, disregardless of content or merit. They were proud of this, they bragged about doing it.
So like or dislike? The same assholes will ALWAYS dislike EVERY post I make, it is not an accurate assessment of merit.

It's full of stars!  :)  I love it. Kudos to Sunny for getting us onto a scratch-built design that you guys have full control over and can adjust as you see fit. Only suggestion I'd make post rollout would be the sort order of the comments: I'd suggest ascending (newest comments go on bottom as before) rather than descending (newest comments on top). I'd prefer that design because replies within comments are sorting ascending; mixing that ascending sort within an overall descending sort is confusing, IMHO. In addition, I'd move the comment entry box to the bottom of the comments. I prefer that design because I like to read (or at least skim) all of the comments before chiming in. With the comment box at the bottom, it's there where I want it. With this design, I have to read the comments, then scroll back up to find the comment entry box. My squirrelly 2 cents.

Okay, two questions (so far).
  1. Did you do away with the 'Next Article' / 'Previous Article' links on the page or am I just not seeing it?
  2. Did you do away with reply notifications?

MeGrendel, that's nothing. Originally, they were planning on corralling users with small, furry mammal avatars onto a mirror website far away from the rest of the community. We were going to be segretated with 5Cats! It was an outrage. Fortunately, I convinced Fancy to adopt a Small Furry Mammals Non-Discrimination Policy. ~whew~

Waitaminnit! How do I know this is not a mirror website? Perhaps it's all a clever ruse and the real I-A-B website is somewhere else?! ~Squrlz gnaws on the edge of the webpage to test its authenticity~ Hmmmm. Seems legit. I think I'm OK here.

While I rather enjoyed the 'Black' format of the original IAB, I will give this one a chance to see what it's like and will critique it as necessary.  This will be difficult for me as I'm sure ya'll may have noticed I tend to try and keep my opinions to myself.  Just glad we're still in business.

We're thinking of including a switch that allows OG users to go back and forth between a black and light background, but that's a backburner item as it would take some serious backend work, but it has been discussed.

The black theme needs to be brought back sooner rather than later.  It's on of the reasons I prefer this site to others.  The majority of the stuff I see on here that is the most interesting to me, when I show to my wife she's already seen or heard about it on facebook.  I may as well just go there and follow the same people she follows.

Also, unable to post comments when logged in on Firefox.  Another reason to not waste time at this site any more.

Also, where did the button to go to the previous post go?  My preferred way of browsing the site was to load the most recent post and then just keep going back through the posts until I got to one I had already seen.  Looks like my button to do that has disappeared as well.

Please don't take this as all negative or a threat to leave, I know it kinda sounds like that, but it's really not meant that way.  I'll still come her because I hate facebook, lol.  I just really liked the old them and the ability to use firefox.  I can adjust the way I browse the site, but if those previous/next post buttons could come back as well that would be great.
