This photo has no red pixels in it, yet you see red. MIND BLOWN! Motherboard explains the optical illusion.

Today at work, this went into the office messenger.  We are software developers.  I wrote a program to scan all the pixels and if it found any where there was more red component than green or blue, I logged it (for example -> 192, 190, 175).

Does this count?

There were 44.

While still actually grey,  very slightly, red-grey.

I claim the win.

Remeber Black and White telly? You often 'saw' the colours in that- snooker changed the colour of two balls ( God knows which two) so that viewers could tell the difference- but those who really knew the game had no issue seeing the colours.

madduck Ted Lowe certainly thought so - "Griffiths is snookered on the brown, which, for those of you watching in black and white, is the ball directly behind the pink".

I believe the brown was made a lighter, more poop-like colour so it could be differentiated from the reds. Not sure about a second colour change.

Just to enhance the explanation given on this nice illusion... It is not true that "This photo has no red pixels in it". It has no pixel that we would interpret as red. If I pick the color which is on top of the bottom strawberry, it is (154,183,181), which appears as gray-green, but actually, it contains 30% of red (in subtractive lighting mode).

Our brain does not "invent" red to "remember the strawberries", it simply "removes" the blue-green ambient light (the white of the cream and the plates actually are 190,255,255).
If you remove the red from this image, you obtain some grayscale picture on which our brain does not see any red.

m3dm3d this is it exactly.  Even though there may not be a 255,0,0 pixel at all, there is indeed red.  In fact i bet in most pictures you take of things that have red, you won't find a 255,0,0 pixel.

Depending on the angle I look at things Everything has a reddish appearance, or Greenish or Blueish. That's the problem when each eye  has more of one type of cones than the other.

While it is true that there appears to be no 'true' red', there are any number of colors that are mixtures that include a significant amount of red.

And purple is an illusion.
