Monopoly Announced The Addition (And Deletion) Of Three New Game Pieces And They're No Race Car

Submitted by: fancylad 1 month ago Games

There's been some big news at the old Monopoly factory today. After an internet-wide vote, Monopoly fans have given the boot to the boot, the wheelbarrow, and thimble, and I for one say good riddence to all three of them -- especially the thimble, I mean, c'mon, really? A thimble? No.

The game pieces that will replace them, also decided upon by fans in the same online poll, are a rubber duck, a T-rex, and a penguin.

Hmph. An acorn would have been good, but then, that's my own obsession.

I actually think the original game piece designs are the best--they were all iconic objects from the decade of Monopoly's origins. There are so many other elements of the game that evoke the 1930s: the rear view of a Model-T on the No Parking space, the police officer and prisoner uniforms on the Go To Jail space, the mustache and clothing of the game's mascot, Uncle Pennybags, etc. By contrast, the new pieces seem faddish and out-of-step. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to buy a set of the original pieces on eBay.

Update: I just found a good article on the origins of the Monopoly pieces. Apparently, the inventor first intended for players to use small items from around the house, such as buttons, pennies, bottle caps, and thimbles, as their markers. The inventor's niece, however, had an inspired idea: Why not use the figurines from a charm bracelet instead?

dromed Half a walnut shell would be good. A peanut or acorn, on reflection, could be problematic: "Your move, Squrlz. Wait--did you eat your token again?!"

thezigrat Our game didn't have a cat, but it did have an iron.  The top hat was always the most coveted in our house.  Along with the orange colour group

punko The cat was added more recently it replaced the Iron, The most coveted piece was in my house was the old race car, And I guess if you want the robots you'll have to rifle a Star Wars set or a Dr Who in the toy isle ( I'm not saying to actually do that though)

I don't see what a T-Rex, a penguin, and a rubber duck have to do with the game

jeanrenaud well, a cat, dog, and a rubber duck are at least commonly seen in cities, appropriate for a game about buying up a city.
