How Far Away Can You Get From Everybody Else Without Leaving Earth?

Submitted by: panth753 3 months ago Misc

Attention misanthropes and anti-social people of the world: Hate people, and want to get away from everyone else? Well, you're in luck here are the most isolated places on earth. I've always wondered that the answer was to this question. It's good to know I'm not the only one who wants to get as far away as possible from people sometimes, too.

I was captivated by the video's report on Tristan da Cunha. I did some research and spent an absurd amount of time perusing a website made by and for the island's inhabitants (and also for vistors and the idly curious). Check it out. In all honesty, after an hour of looking around, I had a pretty good feel for what it would be like to live there. Wow, is it remote. And with a population around 250, you get the sense that family politics plays a very big role in your life experience. I mean, pretty much everyone is going to know your business. And either you're going to get along with the Greens, the Repettos, and the Swains or you aren't, and if you don't, life isn't going to be very fun. (Those three families alone account for 64% of the island's population.) If you check out the website, be sure to look at the Tristan Love Socks, which are adorbs. The number of stripes on the socks is code for how the gifter regards the recipient: 2 large stripes + 5 small stripes = Head over heels in lurv!

Yeah, it's me again. OK, so I just came up with a slogan: "Tristan de Cunha--it's like living in the Scottish highlands but with a volcano in your backyard." Maybe I'll submit that to their website.

Okay, so I think this will be my last Tristan da Cunha post for the night. I've almost got it out of my system. The only negative I can see about the island is that it's very--forgive me, Brits, for saying this--but very British in its vibe. It seems to have a culture that's a mix of the Scottish highlands and Ireland. Everyone's pink-skinned and there's a Catholic church that pretty much everyone goes to on Sundays, which are observed as a day of rest. Knitting is a big pastime with the women. All of that might be just fine, if you're expecting it. Just don't go to Tristan da Cunha looking for an exotic South Sea vibe. It's not Tahiti, for example. I happen to like gentle smiles, coconuts, and hula dances, so maybe the Hawaiian Islands or Polynesia would be a better fit. Hmmmm.

I am such a nutcase. I simply cannot get enough of Tristan da Cunha. So, how's this for evocative and romantic? The island is round and consists of the cone of a volcano in the center and the slopes leading down the sides into the sea, with a margin of flat land by the sea that's inhabited. Consequently, the geography is described in terms of points (the bits of land protruding out into the sea) and gulches (the small valleys leading down the sides of the volcano). Every islander, no doubt, knows these places like the back of his hand. For the points, you've got: Anchorstock Point, Cave Point, Stonyhill Point, Lyon Point, Hottentott Point, Rookery Point, et cetera. For the gulches, you've got: Molly Gulch, Spring Gulch, Deep Gulch, Goat's Road Gulch, First Lagoon Gulch, Gipsy's Gulch, et cetera. I love it! Damn, I really want to visit this place now.

Drop a snickers bar in the deep end.  Let it float around a bit while everyone screams and gets out.  Then eat the snickers bar with a sh1t eating grin and see if that works any better.

I always tell people the same thing when they're like, "I'm moving somewhere with fewer people. Everyone coming here has ruined this place." I'm like, "Guess what they're gonna say about you when you get there!"
