Tufts Student: If Your Costume Is Culturally Offensive, You're On Double Secret Probation

Remember the similar article we ran a month or so ago about this one? It was all about Yale students getting up in some poor prof's grill about Halloween costumes that might offend said students. It's a good article read it -- it's a companion to this new "Halloween on College Campuses 2016" outrage...

An excerpt from The College Fix:

Members of Tufts University’s Greek system have been told they could face “serious disciplinary sanctions” — including a possible investigation by the campus police — for wearing Halloween costumes that offend peers or make the campus community “feel threatened or unsafe.”

The letter stated in part that “Greek Brothers and Sisters have worn costumes that appropriate cultures and reproduce stereotypes on race, gender, sexuality, immigrant or socioeconomic status. Outfits relating to tragedy, controversy, or acts of violence are also inappropriate. … It is our mission to promote spaces that allow members of the Tufts community to have fun without feeling as though any part of their identity is being misrepresented or targeted.”

The letter went on to warn “there are consequences for wearing an offensive costume.”

It states: “Mary Pat McMahon, the Dean of Student Affairs, described the consequences as follows: ‘The range of response for students whose actions make others in our community feel threatened or unsafe, or who direct conduct towards others that is offensive or discriminatory, includes [Office of Equal Opportunity] and/or [Tufts University Police Department] investigation and then disciplinary sanctions from our office that could run a wide gamut depending on what is brought to our attention and the impact of these actions on others. Any complaints will result in full investigation by University officials and could result in serious disciplinary sanctions through Judicial Affairs.’"

It's weird. Where do people think these kids get their ideas, beliefs, attitudes from? Do they think they are self-taught? They are a reflection of the people we hire to teach them.

What do you expect... We have teachers teaching the blame everyone else but me attitude and concepts like only white can be racist and all whites are racist. And "Ohhh we so fragile we need coloring books and safe spaces... We need nappiepoos too," This new generation needs to grow a pair and learn life is hard, often deadly. They cant keep up with this coddled life for long. Just because they want the world to be all hugs and smiley stickers doesn't make it so for the rest of the world won't participate in their cupcakaficated games.

on halloween, there should be no such thing as "consequences for wearing an offensive costume." that was as far as i got in the article. people are going to wear what they are going to wear. if it offends some people, then those people can and should express themselves. but people cannot force others to wear what they want. halloween is the one night when everyone can be whatever they want. there are cosplayers and larpers, but not everyone is into that. but almost everyone loves halloween. so you shouldnt try to ruin it for others, and at the same time, you shouldnt let yours be ruined by others. if you wear a racist costume, just be prepared to deal with people who are offended. if you are offended by a costume, then you should express yourself. but neither should try to attack the other. do not attack someone who is wearing an offensive costume, and do not attack some one who is offended by a costume.

Isn't part of college about preparing people for the riggers of real life? How can this be done if one pampers these coddled pansies against everything that might offend, scare, annoy, make angry, or even mildly intimidate them? If this cupcackafication continues schools might just stop giving out grades because it separates the smart ones from the morons and give hugs to everyone. Hell my advanced political science Prof would get right in your face and swear at you, if needed. He had a rubber "Bull Shit" stamp he used to grade term papers and it was one of the most enlightening classes I ever had.

do you seriously not get it? young adults are well aware of the type of world they are getting themselves. the thing is, they dont like it. they refuse to accept the sexist and racist world we live in. so instead of just saying, "ok this is what we have to DEAL with in life" they are now saying, "ok this what we to do to CHANGE the way we live." generation x fucked up. they just ignored everything. they didnt try to change the world, they just let it get worse and worse. so back the fuck up assholes when the cupcakafication rolls in, because youre clearly too ignorant to understand we are trying to make the world for the better. women and black people shouldnt have to learn in college that they need to accept that they will be treated as second class citizens next to white men, they should learn how to change the world.

Oh suck it up butter cup. "The white man is keeping me down" argument is a fucking tired and lame one. Women and blacks can achieve whatever they want. But just like anybody else, they got to bust their ass, bust a move, stay hungry and focused. If your lot in life looks bleak then step back and take a good look in a clean mirror...'cause 9/10 you're looking at the problem. Nobody is claiming there's no sexism or racism ...but to use it as an excuse to not try or expect special treatment everywhere is just stupid. You are in charge of your life and nobody is in a better position to fix it than you. Do you seriously think your generation is of some superior stock...that you understand the needs of the future better than those who came before you. You arrogant conceited fuck. Ever generation has had to deal with the mistakes of the ones that came before. So I say again...suck it up butter cup. We don't get to choose when we live. We just have to try and do the best we can.

i dont have to suck anything up. im a white male born in the suburbs mother fucker. life has been handed to me on a silver platter. i have rarely ever experienced racism or sexism towards myself. you are absolutely right, "The white man is keeping me down" is a fucking tired and lame argument, but its still true. "You are in charge of your life and nobody is in a better position to fix it than you." i absolutely agree, but unfortunately, for people who werent born white and male, their life is going to be harder to live in north america, because racism and sexism exist. "Do you seriously think your generation is of some superior stock...that you understand the needs of the future better than those who came before you." all i know is that my generation is trying to fix the problems of the world while everyone from generation x makes fun of them for trying. "We don't get to choose when we live. We just have to try and do the best we can." then you shouldve tried harder and done better bitch. "Nobody is claiming there's no sexism or racism ...but to use it as an excuse to not try or expect special treatment everywhere is just stupid." i dont understand what you are trying to say here, please clarify.

So Rob you are saying you feel it is ok for this school to punish those who offend a small minority of strudents? How ISL of you. Why not punish women who do not wear burqa's because it offends the people of the book.

What am I saying? I'm saying that if you show up on time, work hard and don't leave early you're ahead of the curve...ahead of lots of white men in fact. Act like you belong where you want to be and 99% of your "problem" will be solved. And if you can bother to live on less that you make you'll have something called savings. This is insurance against people being an asshole towards you. Call it Fuck You Boss money. There are waaayyy too many successful blacks and women to be playing the equality card today. If your lot sucks...take a look in the mirror.

"Nobody is claiming there's no sexism or racism ...but to use it as an excuse to not try or expect special treatment everywhere is just stupid." ok, i still dont know what youre talking about exactly, i just wanted to say that no matter what you are talking about, this isnt about speical treatment, this is about equality. nobody is demanding special treatment, black people and women just want to be treated the same as white men.

You can also just pay $2 and win a bike in a lottery, just like I did: Possible but unlikely. It happens to the alibi black rich person you present as a role model in a magazine, but that's not the reality for most people. Truth is: being in the upper class, having money is a great help to improve your life. You have to work much less to achieve the same thing.

So Tufts is all for "diversity and inclusion" except for Halloween costumes or anything else they don't like. Funny how intolerant people are who preach inclusion and tolerance.

I don't think avoiding offensiveness at all costs, as done here, is OK, but if people try to argue that you should be allowed to be intolerant and your intolerance should be included under the banner of tolerance, that's stupid.

it is funny, rather ironic really. its kind of like a hippocratic oath. the one thing i absolutely refuse to tolerate in life is intolerance to others.

ok, so there is a difference between hippocrates and hypocrisy. i thought a hippocratic oath meant as a doctor you must try to heal everyone even the people you would rather let die.

One of my black buds showed up in a KKK grand dragon costume at one of our many Halloween parties, we all laughed and had a good time. Fuck pussy snowflakes, grow the hell up.

im sorry, does growing up mean to just ignore what offends you? what if there was one person at that party who was offended, but everyone else laughed and had a good time. think about how psychologically damaging that could be, that everyone the person knows is just laughing at the very thing that offends them. personally, i think a black guy dressed up as a kkk member is hysterical, and i like to think that black bud of yours is the type of guy who can take a racist joke, but not everyone can. you live in the same world as those pussy snowflakes, and those pussy snowflakes are going to be the future. so maybe you should grow up and starting taking them a little more seriously. or you can of course just remain ignorant.

If those pussy snowflakes are our future, then we are fooked! I am bringing up my three children to think and be tough.  They will be controlling all of the snowflakes.

That's just bullshit, told by assholes to defend themselves when decent people stop them. Some things are offensive, and if you've got a brain, you know that. Especially these assholes know that, that's why they do it. Yes, there is a big gray area and a lot of social context, also a lot of people chose to get offended. No, if you intentionally cross the line, you are to blame.
