How to Look Stupid as an Adult

If traveling doesn’t make you want to kill yourself, enough… maybe this bag will help?

This story was headlined in my bookmarks as, “Someone at the Telegraph was stupid enough to fall for this kickstarter.” Can you imagine thousands of people riding motorized luggage at O’Hare, Heathrow, JFK Airport, or LAX? I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t go over well.

The Telegraph: “On the down-side (when compared to ridealong bags for junior travellers), the Modobag does not look like a creature from the African savannah or a medieval fairytale. On the plus side, it does come with a motor, a steering pole and brakes – meaning you can drive it all the way to your flight’s last call without working up a sweat or a shortness of breath.

The Modobag can even reach speeds three times faster than walking – an indoor setting of 5mph; an outdoor setting of 8mph – making missed connections a thing of the past.”

yeah, because we ALL get way too much exercise when travelling and eating crappy restaurant food.

I'd like to see someone try to use one in the Jackson-Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta Georgia. Busiest airport in the world, and thousands of people who don't know how to get the hell out of the way. I was just in there this past Monday, and saw a group of people walking side by side, taking up over 3/4 of the available walking space in the concourse. Fuck everyone else, we don't care if they miss their connecting flight or not, we're going to walk shoulder to shoulder! Idiots. I see that type of thing, and worse, every time I'm in there.

I want it. I want it with a little bell, tassels, a pinwheel and little radio. I wonder when they will be turned into bombs like pressure cookers have been? This seems like an obvious use to me. Just make the luggage remote controlled and bam! no getting busted for taking your pressure cooker bomb out of its luggage. (If I wasn't on a list already, I'm sure this comment put me there lol)

On top of everything else, it weighs 19 lbs., EXCLUDING batteries. They don't tell you what the battery weighs, but do say it has a range of 8 miles, so not an insignificant battery. So, adding a few lbs. for the battery, and 10-15 lbs. of actual contents, and you're talking 35-40 lbs (or more, if they really fill it up). Since this is obviously intended for use as a carry-on, imagine some not-very-strong person (the kind of person who would decide they need this) trying to stow this over your head.

Picture it: A squirrel riding a suitcase all around the  airport terminal. That would be the bomb. For humans, not so much.

"That would be the bomb."  I wouldn't be calling it that, especially at the airport.

LOL. True. I wrote that without thinking. Then, after it posted, I thought, "Hello, Homeland Security. Sorry you've now been tasked with reading through all my emails." ~sigh~

It uses lithium ion batteries, just like the Samsung Note phones that set themselves on fire, just like the hoverboards that set themselves on fire and were banned from planes. Filling our cargo holds full of lithium ion batteries is not a good idea. It doesn't matter how silly you look riding it.

Thank you. I was going to look that up in the expectation that that was the case. No, not a good idea. Also, usually, walking is better for you. Luggage races might be fun to watch, though, while you're waiting for your flight.
