Retard Sales Director, from Wikipedia, its a safety feature: "Today's Spirit of Ecstasy, from the 2003 Phantom model onward, stands at 3 inches and, for safety, is mounted on a spring-loaded mechanism designed to retract instantly into the radiator shell if struck from any direction. There is a button within the vehicle which can raise/lower the emblem when pressed. She can be made from highly polished stainless steel, stainless with 24-carat gold plating, or from illuminated frosted crystal - the latter two being optional extras. Aftermarket customized versions are also available, including those covered in a matte black paint or studded in diamonds.[5][6]"

Interesting, but I'm not sure Wikipedia has it right. For safety? In a collision with a pedestrian, I think I'd be more concerned with the damage the car's bumper and grill would do than the figurine. Perhaps emergency rooms really are seeing pedestrians impaled by Spirits of Ecstasy, but I'm skeptical. No, I think one too many Rolls Royce owners have returned to their cars to find the ornament gone. As an emblem, it's iconic of wealth and you just know it's got to be an attractive target for thieves. Now, with the press of a button, you can manually retract the ornament when you park the car. Problem solved.

Saw this video on WSHH. Most of the commentary was how to get around that and steal it anyway.

Hmph. Are you suggesting that my series of 87 "North American Nut and Tree Bark Identification" videos might not be welcome here? Spoilsport.

Shouldn't that just be limited to 'US Nut and Tree Bark'? Everyone knows Canadians don't have any nuts.
