Altruism of the highest order is spending your whole life working for a little medallion of metal and then selling it a few days later to raise cash to save the life of a child. That’s what Olympic discus thrower, Piotr Małachowski did about a week ago. The man with a heart of gold sold his silver medal to help a little boy with eye cancer pay for his operation.

From Scroll.in:

"The Olympian wrote, 'My silver medal today is worth a lot more than a week ago. It is worth the life and health of a small Olek. It is our great shared success.'"

In light of such a touching gesture towards the less fortunate, Małachowski comes from a line of kind hearted Olympians. Israeli judoka Yarden Gerbi, Ukrainian heavy weight boxer Wladimir Klitschko, Polish swimmer Otylia Jedrzejczak, and American swimmer Anthony Ervin have all given their medals to better causes.
