Gettin' Paid To Drink: The Struggle To Become An Elite Wine Sommelier

Submitted by: lalapancakes 10 months ago Lifestyle

If I could get paid to drink wine for a living that would be the last anyone saw of me. I have a friend who just passed his high level sommelier exam but impressively, he still manages to make public appearances. Of course he’s much more of a functional drinker and test taker than I.

Shockingly, being a sommelier wasn't discussed in my high school career counseling. I didn't even know about it through college. I guess wine wizardry is kind of a secret society but it's fitting because as I said before -- it's also hard as hell to test into, anyway.

The California BAR exam is supposed to be one of the most daunting career tests out there but from what I’ve been told by many lower level “somms” the wine tests are much much harder. Even Forbes says somm tests are on par with most medical school tests. Personally, I don't have that kind of time or motivation to learn about wine but I have to respect the tiny fraction of people out there who do and have taken the master somm test, and passed.

My husband is a sommelier, I enjoy it when he brings his work home with him??...

I watched this, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's definitely a rather, interesting? Unique? I don't even know what the word is, but it's definitely 1 plus acid. As much as I enjoy a nice glass of wine there's no way I'd be this 'into' it.

I saw this doc -- highly recommended if you're into the behind-the-scenes drama over something that seems so trivial to 99.9999 percent of the rest of the world. It's funny to see these tasters go nuts over their exams, exactly like if they were studying for a bar exams.
